As we gear up to welcome back our students, an exciting event awaits us: a Solar Eclipse scheduled for Monday, April 8th. Imperial County is among many areas in the U.S. and Mexico that will experience a solar eclipse on April 8th as the moon passes between Earth and the Sun. Although other parts of the US will experience a total solar eclipse, Imperial County will experience a partial solar eclipse between 50% and 60%. The partial eclipse is expected to begin around 10 a.m. and will peak about an hour later at 11:15 a.m., before ending at approximately 12:20 p.m. While Imperial County is not in the path of the total eclipse, eye safety is still a first priority. It is always dangerous to view any part of the sun’s surface directly without proper filters, any day of the year, and observing an eclipse without proper eye protection can instantly cause severe eye injury. Please discuss with your child these dangers and the importance of not looking at the sun during the eclipse. Please note that sunglasses do not make looking at an eclipse safe. We will share safety information with staff and students at the start of the day Monday, April 8, 2024. Eye safety will be a first priority and will be reinforced throughout the day. If at any time there are concerns regarding eye safety, or students not following safety precautions, students will be returned indoors. Pupil Supervisors will be aware of the eye safety precautions and will enforce eye safety at all times. San Diego County Office of Education has also provided a website with safety tips and activities. Between 10:00am and 12:20pm, we will implement the following safety measures: 1. Lunch will be provided in the classrooms for (TK-7th Grade). The 8th-grade students will return to their usual schedule as it falls outside the specified time frame. 2. Recess activities will take place indoors. 3. Physical Education classes will be conducted indoors. 4. Pupil Supervisors will oversee passing periods and restroom usage. Students will receive reminders about the risks of direct eye exposure to the sun while outdoors. Additionally, please discuss the dangers of looking directly at the sun during lunch and passing periods with the students. We are thrilled to have our students back after a rejuvenating Spring Break. See you Monday!

Precipitation forecasted to start at 11:00 today and continue through the 7pm hour in the east county. Rainfall forecasts range from 0.1” to 0.2” throughout most of the county, up to 0.5” in the far northwestern and northeastern portions. A flood watch has been issued for eastern San Diego County mountains. Calexico, Calipatria, El Centro, and Holtville have reported opening self-help sandbag and sand distribution locations. ICFD has four locations: Fire Station 2 at1078 Dogwood Road in Heber. Fire Station 5 at 112 Highway 78 in Palo Verde. Fire Station 7 at 8071 Luxor Avenue in Niland. Fire Station 8 at 518 Railroad Avenue in Winterhaven. Imperial County Public works has prepositioned heavy equipment in Palo Verde, Heber, at Huff Road/ Wheeler Road, Salton Sea, and Niland areas. Equipment can be quickly transitioned to Seeley and Ocotillo if needed. High winds are probable Friday into Saturday at 15mph to 20mph sustained and gusting to 25mph to 30mph, particularly in south and east county. Rain next week has some possibility each day, but Tuesday is likely to have the most rainfall. Rainfall totals for next week are still not available; however, NWS San Diego did state that it will be a more slow moving storm that could result in more rainfall than today. The operational area’s EOC remains at Management Watch and no local EOCs are opened. Dry weather is expected after next week and through mid-February.

Due to recent heavy rainfall, several roads are experiencing flooding. Please see attachment for road closures. For real-time updates on road conditions, we recommend checking with local authorities, listening to news channels, or using reliable navigation apps. Stay safe and take necessary precautions.

Due to the extremely cold weather forecasted this week, we will open the Gym and Multipurpose Room (MPR) for students during the morning arrival. This will provide them with a warm and comfortable space to stay active and engaged during the colder temperatures.

Free Community Event: This event is a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together, enjoy the rich cultural heritage of tamales, and celebrate the vibrancy of our local community. Happy New Year! We are very excited to welcome back our students from the Winter Break. We would like to bring to your attention an important matter concerning ongoing construction activities in the vicinity of Heber School along 11th Street, Heffernan, and 14th Street. The safety and well-being of our students are of utmost priority, and we are reaching out to ensure that everyone remains vigilant and takes extra precautions during this period. Regular School For the regular school day, the drop off/pick up/walk-home will remain the same through the “Carline” on 11th Street. Heber School-ELOP For Heber School-ELOP, the student pick up will be moved from the “ASES Office” to the “Carline” on 11th Street Here are a few key points to consider: * Increased Traffic: With construction activities, there may be an increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area. Please exercise caution while commuting to and from Heber School and be mindful of potential changes in traffic patterns. * Restricted Areas: Some areas may be cordoned off or restricted due to construction. * Awareness Talk: Have a conversation with your children about the potential hazards associated with construction sites and the importance of staying alert and following safety guidelines. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this time.
