On Thursday, October 19, 2023 our school will participate in the Great Southern California ShakeOut. At 10:19 a.m., your child will drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk, and hold on, along with millions of southern Californians. The ShakeOut is based on a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that one day may shake all of Southern California strongly. This is the chance for us all to practice what to do, so we are safe when it happens. Please see attached letter for more information.

On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, beginning at approximately 11:20 hours PDT, FEMA will be conducting simultaneous nationwide tests of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system. During these tests, alerts/messages will be sent to all cellular devices, televisions, and radios, utilizing IPAWS-OPEN and FEMA’s IPAWS respectively. The purpose of Wednesday’s test is to ensure both systems continue to provide an effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those at the national level. In case Wednesday’s test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, a backup testing date has been set for Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones nationwide. This will be the third nationwide test, but only the second test sent to all cellular devices. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless device. The WEA message will be broadcast from cell towers for a total of 30 minutes and should only activate each cellular device once. If a cellular device is off or out of range when the test begins and is subsequently turned on or comes in range of a cell tower during the 30-minute testing period, that device should still receive the WEA test message (this is assuming they have a WEA-capable device, cellular service is enabled, the device is not in airplane mode, etc). The EAS portion of the test will be directed toward all radios and televisions nationwide. The EAS portion of the test will only be broadcast for one minute once the test begins. Customers should expect the test alerts/messages to interrupt regularly scheduled television and radio programming. This will be the seventh nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. It should be noted that the IPAWS Modernization Act of 2015 (Public Law 114-143) requires FEMA to conduct nationwide EAS tests at least once every three years.
